Pelicans of the Manych: on the factors affecting their well-being

Abstract

The well-being of Dalmatian and Great White Pelicans breeding on the islands of Lake Manych and Manych-Gudilo depends largely on how much water the region holds, on rainfall and on the water management system. The growth in Great White Pelican numbers is driven not only by breeding but also by adult birds moving in, apparently from less favourable areas, and should be read in terms of the state of their habitats within this part of the range.
